I started a tribe for male feminists and women who want to discuss the role of men in feminism, so we wouldn't take up so much space around the topic in general feminist forums like this one. i invite all of you to join!

Re: men and feminism tribe
Sat, August 18, 2007 - 9:56 PMmales and feminism...
males who identify as men or boys can--again, according to bell hooks, feminist philosopher--advocate feminism. read: ADVOCATE feminism, but cannot be feminist themselves.
anyone within this category finding this specification threatening or exclusionary seems to me to be the ultimate tacit expression of the power dynamic which impelled feminism to be created in the first place.
advocate or feminist as men / boys/ males believe themselves to be -

Sun, August 19, 2007 - 9:35 AMI think that the language is casual...
and so may not be ideologically correct...
but I get the concept.
I am of the opinion "people for civil rights" is a good description. -

Re: men and feminism tribe
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 10:18 AMto the feminist philosoph language is never casual. important distinctions are specifically drawn for clarity and to dispell possible misunderstanding, misconstruction of ideological concepts.
i am pleased to read accounts of men struggling with these important feminist topic points -however they have come to this thinking and as whatever they choose to self-identify, but make no mistake, men and males can never be the arbiters of any sort of feminism...
lovely to see the concept as 'gotten.'
and as a fan of high and common theory--whether feminist or in general--i feel compelled to make points on language and theory as construction and concept changes and loses meaning when rephrased casually.
"people for civil rights" sounds good to me...as it blankets equally if broadly. -

Sun, August 19, 2007 - 3:28 PMi have no problem with your comments skadi. in the tribe itself, i suggested "men against sexism" instead. do you find that more apropos? -

Re: men and feminism tribe
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 3:40 PM"I am of the opinion "people for civil rights" is a good description."
but it's not just about rights, or about behaviors that are coded as "civil." this term is great for some situations, but too cold for my taste. feminism is more about weighing relevant variables of gender and sex and sexual orientation and advocating for irrelevant usages of such concepts to take a hike, whether it's in the civil arena, in law, or in personal relationships or awakening. -

Re: men and feminism tribe
Sun, August 19, 2007 - 3:42 PMshit, maybe it should be "men and feminism" so it's topical and not an identity marker for those in the tribe...?
